Brain and nervous system

This section is a whistlestop tour, as more of our members fund research into disorders of the brain and nervous system than any other single area. This is perhaps unsurprising: 10 million people in the UK live with a neurological condition. These disable over 2 per cent of us at any given time, 1 per cent of us are newly diagnosed every year, 10 per cent of visits to A&E departments are for a neurological condition, and about 850,000 of us care for someone affected.

Stroke, the brain infection meningitis, a range of movement disorders, a rare genetic condition and the control of pain are just a few of the areas that our members focusing on this field are pursuing.

The Stroke Association
The Stroke Association has used research findings to harness the skill and acumen of the general public
Meningitis Research Foundation
More than 100 research projects relating to the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia
Meningitis Trust
Among key steps in prevention was the 1999 introduction of a vaccine against the deadly meningococcal group C strain … the number of cases has fallen by 95 per cent
Ataxia UK
One of the most important discoveries in the field, changing forever the landscape for a debilitating condition called Friedreich’s ataxia
Parkinson’s Disease Society
This work is helping to pinpoint the way in which genetic and environmental factors may act together to cause the disease
Tuberous Sclerosis Association
The first genetic disorder in which research into the pathways of the protein products of identified genes has resulted in ongoing clinical trials
The Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Association
The PSP Association is set to sponsor a small tolerability trial of a new drug later this year, and hopes this may eventually lead to a large-scale collaborative trial
The British Pain Society
Huge strides in the improvement of post-operative pain control, leading to speedier recovery and earlier discharge home
