Diabetes and metabolic medicine
Given that our bodies comprise billions of cells, which communicate with one another using a range of chemicals and hormones, it is unsurprising that things can go wrong. While numerous AMRC charities fund some projects in this area, five do this and only this, and diabetes in adults and children occupies the efforts of three of them.
Diabetes UK
When Diabetes UK-funded scientists made a genetic discovery that revealed he had a rare form of diabetes, his insulin injections became a thing of the past
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
We believe it’s the best possible mechanical cure for type 1 diabetes, while we continue the search for a biological cure. Regulating blood glucose levels is vital to reduce the risk of the many devastating complications that can arise from this condition
Society for Endocrinology
The most exciting potential is that of drug delivery – the ability to encapsulate insulin, growth hormone and other insoluble drugs into pollens which can cross the gut wall intact, but are then destroyed within the bloodstream and release their contents
